UPDATE:
Well, the extremists on the board had their way, and have rewritten the standards. Please write or call the largest textbook publishers: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, and Pearson Education and tell them not to give in to this extremist agenda.
If the current Texas State Board of Education has its way, children using 'approved' textbooks will not learn anything about Thomas Jefferson's political philosophy or his thoughts on the separation of church and state. Last year the far-right extremists on the State Board of Education wanted to teach students that evolution is a lie. Now they are rewriting history by claiming that separation of church and state is a myth and Phyllis Schlafly is more important than Thomas Jefferson. When our children study the civil rights movement they'll have to learn about the "unintended consequences" of Great Society programs and affirmative action.
For a chance to make your voice heard, here are links to websites of two of the many organizations fighting to save our history: Texas Freedom Network and CREDOTM action.
Remember, because of the number of textbooks purchased by Texas schools, the standards set by our State Board of Education determine the textbooks used by a very large number of students nationwide!
